Green Hosting / Action on Climate Change

Our parent company, TwentytwentyMedia (www.2020media.com), started planting trees way back in 2008 to offset our carbon footprint. Whilst we try to reduce our carbon emissions as much as possible with our green servers and choice of datacentre, we recognise that 100% neutrality is not attainable without carbon offsetting. That’s why we plant a tree to offset the carbon on every server rented from us. All carbon in the service we provide is offset through UK tree plantations.

Going Green

  • Carbon offset on all products and services
  • Switching to green energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Carbon Offset Details

The Trees
Our chosen location lies on the Exmoor foothills in Somerset, South-West England. The land was previously used as improved pasture land. It had historically been managed to produce a good growth of grass for grazing. With the plantation taking shape as an area of traditional woodland, significant biodiversity gains have been observed with mice, badgers and birds of prey often seen.

Trees planted include crab apple, beech, oak, and many other traditional English species.

Locking up Carbon
All carbon in the service we provide is offset through UK tree plantations. Trees absorb carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and wood as part of the process of photosynthesis, which allows them to grow. Through this process CO2 is converted into stored carbon, thereby removing it from the atmosphere. Most estimates suggest a tree will absorb around 1 tonne of CO2 through their long life.

UK Woods and Forests
Trees and woods are crucial; they give homes to wildlife, clean air and water, provide food and fuel. All our tree planting takes place in the UK and uses native and bio-diverse species. Every sapling that we use is UK sourced and grown to minimise the risk of importing and spreading tree pests and diseases. Seeds are collected and stored in the UK, and they are all coded and batched so that we can track each individual tree.

Responsible Supply Chain
When purchasing servers we check the background of our suppliers, and look for a commitment to non-exploitation and low power consumption. We recycle as much waste packaging as possible and also recycle mobile phones, toner cartridges and all possible domestic waste.
